D-Day heroes return
10th June 2009 - The Chester Standard
VETERANS from Wirral and Chester NVA have returned from France, the scene of the 1944 Second World War landings. A total of 83 veterans made the emotional return to the scene to commemorate the Normandy landings on June 6, 1944. Code-named Operation Overlord, the D-Day landings saw Allied forces mount a daring invasion of Nazi territroy, along the Normandy coast in France. The operation marked the start of the campaign that led to eventual Allied victory in Europe.
The memorable six-day visit was organised by members of the local D-Day Revisited group and made possible thanks to a number of generous public donations.
